On April 26, 2026, a serious accident occurred on state road SS28 in the tunnel between Pieve di Teco and Cesio (Imperia province). A camper van collided head-on with a passenger car (according to one source, an electric Mercedes). A third vehicle then rear-ended the camper. Four vehicles were involved in total.
The camper driver, a 68–69-year-old resident of Sanremo, was trapped in the cabin. Rescuers extracted him and airlifted him by Grifo helicopter to Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure in critical condition, where he later died. His 78-year-old wife suffered a hand injury and was hospitalized in Imperia. The driver of the oncoming car also sustained moderate injuries. In total, seven people were injured, three of them with varying degrees of severity.
The road was closed in both directions until evening (some sources say until 9:00 PM). A detour was set up via Colle di San Bartolomeo. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
