The Greek Police have issued a clarifying directive on motorhome and caravan parking, distinguishing legal parking from illegal camping. In built-up areas, vehicles up to 7.5m CAN park without restrictions; longer ones up to 24 hours. Outside towns, parking is allowed in designated spots with no time limit, but no camping gear.
Greece: New Rules for Motorhome and Caravan Parking
The Greek Police (EL.AS.) have issued a new clarifying directive specifying parking rules for motorhomes (RVs) and caravans. Based on the Highway Code, the document ends years of confusion and clearly distinguishes legal parking from illegal encampment.
Rules in Built-Up Areas
Within cities and other built-up areas, motorhomes up to 7.5 meters in length may park without any time restrictions. Larger vehicles and all caravans (over 7.5 m) are permitted to stop for a maximum of 24 hours.
Parking Outside Urban Areas
Outside urban areas, parking is allowed in designated spots provided no prohibitory signs are present. The 24-hour time limit does not apply at these locations. However, the directive strictly forbids deploying awnings, setting up furniture, or any other camping equipment. Violations are considered illegal camping rather than parking.
