Greece partially reversed strict 2025 restrictions on camper vans. Vehicles up to 7.5 m CAN now park in towns without time limits, but wild camping with awnings and furniture remains banned under threat of fines and arrest.

Greece has adjusted its camper tourism policy after strict restrictions introduced in early 2025 caused a sharp decline in visitor numbers. According to sources, 50,000 camper vans visited the country in 2024, compared to just 5,000 in 2025.

New rules

  • Camper vans up to 7.5 m in length CAN park in built-up areas without time limits, like passenger cars.
  • Larger vehicles and trailers are allowed to park for up to 24 hours.
  • Setting up awnings, tables, chairs or other equipment outside official campsites is prohibited and considered wild camping, punishable by fines starting at €300 and possible arrest.
  • Beaches and archaeological sites remain under increased police surveillance.

Tourism industry representatives stress that clear and predictable rules are key to attracting camper travellers back.

Traveling to Greece by motorhome via the Balkans: routes and new regulations

Traveling to Greece by motorhome via the Balkans can be a cost-effective alternative to ferries. Key routes pass through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and North Macedonia or along the Adriatic coast. In 2025, Greece introduced stricter regulations, prohibiting the parking of motorhomes and caravans in public areas, including archaeological sites and beaches, with potential fines up to 300 euros.

Conflict with Campers: Tents and Motorhomes in a River on Crete

Authorities and residents in Platanias, Crete, are facing illegal camping in the bed of the Iardanos River. Campers moved their tents and motorhomes to the opposite bank after eviction attempts, which local activists call a mockery of the law in the protected Natura 2000 area. Questions are raised about the legality of the vehicles and the environmental damage from garbage and wastewater.
