Sales of affordable campers in China surged 85.6% in 2025, a British woman turned a Ford van into a mobile home for £25k, and a Japanese couple earned ¥6M from conversions — the trend spans the globe.
The campervan movement is accelerating worldwide, from budget DIY projects to luxury purchases and thriving businesses.
China's booming market
In China, sales of affordable campers (100k–250k yuan) jumped 85.6% in 2025 to 7,376 units, driven by low prices, simplified registration, and state support. Guiyang converters completed over 200 orders. Meanwhile, a Beijing buyer purchased a 4WD Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
Individual conversions
In the UK, 26-year-old Heidi bought a Ford van for £15k and spent £10k on conversion: bed, sofa, oven, shower, skylight, and 300W solar panel. Monthly costs (~£675) are well below average mortgage payments.
In Malaysia, three van owners shared tips: prioritize comfortable sleeping, reliable power, and compact storage. DIY costs run several thousand ringgit.
From side hustle to main business
A Japanese couple, the Bay-Browns, started converting vans as a side job in 2020. Over five years they renovated and sold 17 vehicles; their most expensive project sold for ¥6 million. They now also renovate apartments in New York.
