Spain's DGT has introduced stricter technical inspection rules for motorhomes and campers. Illegal camping with awnings or furniture CAN result in fines up to €5,000. A new S-128 sign for waste water disposal points has been introduced.

Spanish authorities have tightened rules for motorhomes and campervans ahead of the summer season. According to DGT instruction PROT 2026/04, motorhomes (category M) under 4 years are exempt from ITV, those aged 4–10 years require inspection every two years, and vehicles over 10 years need annual checks. For van-based campers (category N), the rules are stricter: annual inspection up to 10 years, and every six months after 10 years.

Parking is allowed on general terms, but setting up furniture, awnings, or expanding the perimeter is considered camping and requires municipal permission. Violations CAN lead to fines of up to €5,000, especially in national parks or for discharging polluting liquids. Overnight stays outside campsites are banned within 100 m of beaches (rural areas) and 20 m (urban areas).

The motorhome fleet in Spain has grown from 48,000 to nearly 137,000 units in recent years. A new road sign, S-128, is being introduced to mark official grey water disposal points.

Scarborough Council calls for review of seafront motorhome parking ban

Scarborough Town Council has urged a reconsideration of the overnight parking ban for motorhomes and campervans on the seafront. The council states the ban has led to displacement into residential areas, causing noise, waste disposal issues, and competition for parking. It proposes a controlled, paid overnight parking scheme on Marine Drive as an alternative.

Gipuzkoa Provincial Council rejects motorhome parking project in Igara

The Department of Territorial Planning of Gipuzkoa denied the declaration of 'public interest' for a private motorhome parking project in the Igara area on non-developable land. The resolution states that neither sectoral legislation nor territorial planning considers such a facility to be of public interest, and that similar services can be located in urban areas, as already done in Donostia. The project included 80 spaces with water supply and gray/black water disposal, but authorities insist that placement on non-developable land requires a direct functional link to rural areas, which is not the case here.

BNG Monforte calls for expansion and improvement of motorhome area

The BNG party in Monforte will present a motion at the next municipal plenary session requesting the expansion and upgrade of the existing motorhome area. The current facility, with about 20 spaces, is considered insufficient given the growth of motorhome tourism and the town's role as the capital of the Ribeira Sacra region. The party highlights a lack of basic services such as water supply, dump station, lighting, and electrical hookups, which limits visitor stays. According to BNG, inaction would mean losing economic opportunities, as some visitors are forced to move to other municipalities due to lack of space or adequate services.
