A Munich court ruled that defective 12-volt sockets in a rented motorhome constitute a substantial defect. The renter, whose companion needed a ventilator, will get €3,400 back.

In summer 2023, a renter paid €3,600 for a four-week trip through Scandinavia in a hired motorhome. After the first night, the 12-volt sockets failed, preventing the companion from charging a required ventilator. The renter terminated the contract and demanded a full refund, but the landlord refused.

The Munich Local Court (Amtsgericht München) sided with the renter, ruling that the electrical defect was a substantial deficiency making the vehicle unfit for habitation, especially during autonomous travel. The court ordered the landlord to return €3,400 and emphasised that a motorhome must be suitable for living, not just driving.
