The European Union has approved a directive enabling category B license holders to operate motorhomes up to 4.25 tons after additional training. Member states must implement the new rules by November 2029.

The European Union has approved a new directive on driving licenses for motorhomes, expanding opportunities for category B license holders. Under the new rules, such drivers will be able to operate motorhomes weighing up to 4.25 tons after completing additional training or examination. The proposal also permits trailer towing, provided the total weight of the combination does not exceed 5 tons.

Member states must implement these rules by November 26, 2029. However, national implementation is proceeding with delays: Germany has not yet adopted the new regulation, keeping category B license holders limited to 3.5 tons. Holders of the older category 3 licenses retain the right to drive heavier vehicles. Sweden is also still determining how to implement these rules.
