Healthcare workers at Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella are forced to live in motorhomes and cars on the parking lot due to high rents. Union CSIF warns that the cancellation of a staff shuttle bus in February has worsened the crisis, and summer may bring a collapse.

The CSIF union has reported that staff at the public Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, Spain, are sleeping in their personal cars or motorhomes on the hospital parking lot because rental housing is unaffordable. A single room costs around €600, eating up to 80% of a salary, leading some workers to turn down temporary contracts.

Transport crisis deepens

The situation worsened after a dedicated bus service from Málaga and other coastal towns was cancelled in February 2025. Employees now face a choice between daily commutes of hundreds of kilometres or living in campers on site. CSIF warns that the coming summer will bring a staff shortage crisis as patient numbers rise and holiday replacements become impossible to find.

Union demands

CSIF is urging hospital management to take urgent action, including reopening the former public residence Marbella (3.5 km from the hospital) for temporary staff accommodation. However, the building was recently handed over to a hotel chain, complicating the plan.

Gipuzkoa Provincial Council rejects motorhome parking project in Igara

The Department of Territorial Planning of Gipuzkoa denied the declaration of 'public interest' for a private motorhome parking project in the Igara area on non-developable land. The resolution states that neither sectoral legislation nor territorial planning considers such a facility to be of public interest, and that similar services can be located in urban areas, as already done in Donostia. The project included 80 spaces with water supply and gray/black water disposal, but authorities insist that placement on non-developable land requires a direct functional link to rural areas, which is not the case here.

BNG Monforte calls for expansion and improvement of motorhome area

The BNG party in Monforte will present a motion at the next municipal plenary session requesting the expansion and upgrade of the existing motorhome area. The current facility, with about 20 spaces, is considered insufficient given the growth of motorhome tourism and the town's role as the capital of the Ribeira Sacra region. The party highlights a lack of basic services such as water supply, dump station, lighting, and electrical hookups, which limits visitor stays. According to BNG, inaction would mean losing economic opportunities, as some visitors are forced to move to other municipalities due to lack of space or adequate services.
