Simon John Turner, 49, living in a Weymouth caravan park, befriended vulnerable victims and tricked them into paying for nonexistent caravans and investments. He was sentenced to 10 years for three fraud counts totaling about £190,000. One victim lost his home.

Conviction and sentence

Simon John Turner, 49, a resident of a caravan park in Weymouth, Dorset, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for defrauding three victims out of approximately £190,000. He pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud and was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on 22 April. Sources disagree on the year: some report 2025, others 2026.

How the frauds unfolded

Between 2018 and 2019, while living in a caravan, Turner befriended a man in his 60s and convinced him to pay £53,046 for two caravans that were never delivered. He later persuaded the same victim to invest £61,025 in a fictitious mortgage scheme. As a result, the victim lost his home and life savings.

In a separate incident, Turner took £76,239 from two other individuals for a caravan that did not exist, providing fake invoices. He also committed similar frauds in Swindon and Reading, which were taken into account during sentencing.

Arrest after failing to appear

According to Dorset Police, Turner failed to attend the sentencing hearing and was later arrested in Hampshire. He was then brought before the court.

Scarborough Council calls for review of seafront motorhome parking ban

Scarborough Town Council has urged a reconsideration of the overnight parking ban for motorhomes and campervans on the seafront. The council states the ban has led to displacement into residential areas, causing noise, waste disposal issues, and competition for parking. It proposes a controlled, paid overnight parking scheme on Marine Drive as an alternative.

Bridge Camera System Explained

Questions have arisen about the effectiveness of ANPR cameras on the Kirkcudbright bridge, which record breaches of weight and width restrictions. The cameras capture all vehicles but automatically detect only the plated weight of a vehicle from the DVLA database, which does not always flag trailers like caravans. Council officials manually sift through the data and pass non-compliant cases to the police, while exploring a system to automatically identify towed caravans.
